We achieved a valuable outcome for the year–Team Manager Mischa

Comment from Team Manager Mischa after the J. League 32nd Sec match against Sanfrecce Hiroshima

Our match against Sanfrecce Hiroshima received much media attention today. It is great for Urawa Reds to be able to have attracted such a lot of attention from the media as the team had suffered from some difficulties in the past few years. Having a match like this with lots of media attention has been a valuable outcome for us this year.

The match we had today was not an easy match for us as Sanfrecce Hiroshima has been the top team for some time this season. If our team had been able to play as well as they did today over the last few matches, we could have been in the position of winning the league title this year. I feel that our team had struggled to win their last few matches as a result of losing the match against Consadole Sapporo. Losing the match might have had some negative effect on the team and contributed to our players becoming impatient. Despite the team’s good performance, we lost the match against Vegalta Sendai, Cerezo Osaka and Kawasaki Frontale. However, as I told my team members, such things happen when playing soccer. There is a time that a team loses despite a good performance. Urawa Reds had been going through such a difficult period. But, I knew that it would lead to a good outcome as they had been performing well. I was telling my team members this.
I know Sanfrecce Hiroshima very well. But, I felt that they have changed a little this season. I think they have shifted to aim for counter attacks after good defense. Though their offensive tactics have changed a little, they still carry out tight defense then switch to attacks when they find a chance. As I had led Sanfrecce Hiroshima over six seasons, I will be extremely delighted if Hiroshima could win the league title this season. However, I am a little concerned about where they would go from here. After all, I used to play with them in Hiroshima.
In any case, our team conducted very good defensive. They were trying to move forward to pursue the ball while conducting good defense today rather than just trying to block the ball at the back. I feel this was the deciding factor for our victory today.
Our team did not let our opponents get a good ball in from the behind. Our team created situations where Sanfrecce Hiroshima had to kick long distance balls. As they did not have other players in front of them to carry through on the balls, we were able to nail down the match in our favor. It was a risky match for us to take the same number of players to defend the team. In Japan, it is usual to have four players to block their opponent team’s attacks. But, in our case today, we matched the number of players to our opponent. It could have created a difficult situation for both teams to pass by each other. However, by looking at how Sanfrecce Hiroshima and Urawa Reds are lately, I thought our players were capable of responding well to our opponent. For this reason, I gave our team the instruction. I am sure today’s match was an interesting match. We had to overlook some of Sanfrecce Hiroshima’s strengths to play risky soccer against them. Nonetheless, we were able to outdo our opponent team today. I feel the result was justifiable as our team performed well today.
