Team Manager Tsuyoshi Otsuki – press conference after the match against Yokohama F. Marinos

Comment from Team Manager Otsuki after the Meiji Yasuda J1 League 19th sec match against Yokohama F. Marinos

Our players did very well.

Questions and Answers

Q: With regard to the second goal Yokohama F. Marinos scored, can you tell us what you discussed with the referee and what kind of explanations were given to you?

A: Please ask the question to the referee as I don’t prefer to talk about our referees. Looking at the match from where I was, I didn’t know what exactly led to the judgement call that was made then. I imagine that those who watched the match on the TV would understand what exactly happened on the pitch. However, referees don’t make their judgement calls by watching a TV screen. I don’t think it would help anything if I make a comment about what had happened. As such, I wish to refrain from making any comments regarding this.

Q: You said that your players did very well. However, the team lost the match with the result of 1 to 3. What was the reason for this?

A: It is me who is to be blamed. I should have managed better, such as directing our players not to allow our opponent to be given the opportunity to score the first goal and to prevent our opponent members from taking the ball to the goal area so that they would not have scored their second and third goals. I have the responsibility for all our players performance.

Q: You have just told us that we should ask the referee about what had happened today. However, as we don’t have the opportunity to interview referees, could you please give an objective and fact-based explanation as to what had happened?

A: If I make a comment, it will be subjective. As this is the case, I prefer not to discuss this. My apologies.

Q: It seemed as through your players played defensively during the first half of the match and more aggressively in the second half of the match. Did you plan more or less for the team to play like this and intend that the second half of the match would be the determining match?

A: I believe it would be difficult to keep the match open for a solid 90 minutes. I am afraid that how we lost the first goal during the first half of the match should not have happened. With regard to our first half performance, our players failed to control the ball after taking the ball away from Yokohama F. Marinos since our opponent players were swift in their actions in terms of switching from defense to offence. I trust this was more of a problem for us.

I am sorry that I wasn’t able to answer some of the questions more clearly. I look forward to our next session.
