Team Manager Tsuyoshi Otsuki – press conference after the match against Oita Trinita

Comment from Team Manager Otsuki after the Meiji Yasuda J1 League 29th sec match against Oita Trinita

First of all, I would like to touch upon Typhoon 19 that hit Japan last weekend that caused devastating damage across Japan including Saitama Prefecture. Under such a circumstance, we were still given the opportunity to play today’s match and we observed silence before we started the match. I feel grateful that our team played the match today despite the current situation. I talked with our team before the match that we must work hard to achieve our goal while being thankful for the fact that we are all well here today.

As for the match content, what we had prepared ourselves for and what our opponent team put out there didn’t quite match during the first half of the match. For this reason, I discussed this with our team during half time and we tried to gain our strength back. However, we ended up with earning zero point today and I am very disappointed by our result.

Questions and Answers

Q: You mentioned that what your team had prepared for didn’t match with what your opponent team put out there during the first half of the match. However, besides that, I am afraid that I couldn’t get a strong sense of gratitude and determination from your team to be able to play in your home stadium today as much as you had described earlier.

A: I do understand what you mean. Because our team couldn’t work out good moves for our defense, I think they were a little baffled. However, we corrected this after having discussed this during half time. As a result, our team was able to move forward. Our players had a strong determination for the match before they started the match today. But, I should have given more directions to them as they were put in a baffling situation despite their strong determination.

Q: As for your team’s performance during the second half, I guess how they performed would have been acceptable if this was the match held in March or April. But, now that it is coming close to the end of season, the story is a little different and today’s result shows the difference. What do you have to say about this?

A: As I mentioned earlier, it is not good that we finished the match with the result of 0 to 1 and gained zero point for our home match. This type of outcome is not good at any time regardless of what month we play the match.

Q: Given the fact that your team will be playing in the AFC Champions League in five days’ time, I assume that you had to carefully select the starting members for the match today. Considering today’s result, it must be quite difficult for the team to move positively forward for the match to be played in five days. Under such a circumstance, what do you think would be most important for the team?

A: I didn’t select today’s starting members with the ACL match in mind. I prepared the team for the match with what we could do our best and utmost at this time. Unfortunately, we cannot wind the clock back. All we will do now is to recover ourselves well for next Wednesday’s match and travel and prepare ourselves well for the match. I believe recovering ourselves well for the match will be very important.

Q: I thought your team member line up was quite different from when your team played against Oita Trinita in June in your away match. What did you ask your team players to do when they were pressing the opponent team from the front line?

A: With regard to our pressing and ball movements, I asked the team to execute both defense and attacks in consideration of their height. However, as we struggled to match our opponent during the first half, we corrected ourselves for the second half of the match. During the first half of the match, the problem we had wasn’t so much with our defense. Our team was struggling to keep the ball in our possession. For this reason, I intended our team to have better control of the ball in our possession so that this would reduce the chance of our team being more focused on our defense. So, I believe the problem we had was not so much of the pressing of the defense but more of what I had just explained.

Q: Muto had to be replaced during the match today. Could you tell us about his current condition?

A: He was sent off to hospital straight away and I am yet to receive an accurate report of his condition. But, I can tell you that he sustained some damage on his shoulder.
