Team Manager Oswaldo Oliveira – press conference after the match against Gamba Osaka

Comment from Team Manager Oliveira after the Meiji Yasuda J1 League 7th sec match against Gamba Osaka

We had a challenging match as we had expected today. Both teams know each other well and had managed to counteract each other’s moves well. Under such a circumstance, Urawa Reds started to control the game well in the second half of the match and we were able to create a good flow. Our team increased the number of opportunities to score goals by increasing the number of times we went into our opponent’s penalty area.

Our team scored the goal in good timing as well. We didn’t give much time for our opponent to fight back.

Questions and Answers

Q: As for today’s game plan, was your intention to have Hashioka and Yamanaka suppress Gamba Osaka’s attacks?

A: That’s right. Gamba Osaka has side backs on both sides who are capable of coming deeper into our area to make attacks aggressively. For this
reason, I had Hashioka and Yamanaka thwart the number of such dangerous attacks coming from those side backs. They both did a good job and fulfilled their tasks well.
Thanks to them thwarting the movements of those side backs, we had managed to handle the ball confidently. As a result, we were able to attack our opponent team in the rear.

Q: The match unfolded to be neck-and-neck and I trust it must have been difficult for you to change players with good timing. How did you make those decision?

A: Firstly, I was planning to have our team make more aggressive attacks, both general attacks and counter attacks. For this reason, I was waiting for the right timing to come for this. Both Martinus and Andrew handled the ball well since they joined the team. Given the timing of the changes and the time they had on the pitch was limited, it is usually quite rare that players can get the ball. But, thanks to them getting the ball, our team was able to increase the volume of our performance and we were able to keep the ball in our possession and play aggressively in our opponent’s half well. Thanks to Martinus and Andrew’s effective plays, our team was able to score a goal.

Q: Ewerton who scored the goal today seems like a reliable player who makes little mistakes. What do you think of him scoring the winning goal today?

A: I think he is still on his way to fit in well into Japanese soccer. He came to Japan from a very different soccer background in many regards such as speed. Since he also needs to know his team mates well, I think it will take a little while for him to fit in.
Having said that, he is a skilled player who makes efforts to improve further. Given this, I regard the fact that he was able to score the winning goal today as a very important development for him. This would boost his confidence and help him to get accustomed to the Japanese style of soccer more.
