Team Manager Mischa - press conference after the match against Kashima Antlers

Comment from Team Manager Mischa after the Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance Company J. League 2nd Stage 12th Sec match against Kashima Antlers

Though our team’s performance was not so good today, we were able to win the match in the end.

As for the first half of the match in particular, we struggled to play our way of soccer in terms of building up attacks from the back. We repeated the process of carrying the ball back to our goal keeper Nishikawa and kicking long balls forward. We lost a goal at an early stage of the first half. However, it was good that our team was able to catch up with our opponent shortly after that by breaking their defense nicely. But, having said that, the first half of the match finished without our team being able to form offensive formations.

With regard to the second half, we managed to control the match relatively well by forming a three-tier attacking formation from the back. But after our team scored another goal and led the match with the result of two to one, our opponent team started to put pressure on us. As a result, we had little choice but to play a defensive game.

One thing I can praise our players about today’s match is the fact that they remained physically strong until the very end of the match. However, I wasn’t fully satisfied with the rest of their performance. We were lucky to have won the match today as Kashima Antler’s performance was more deserving of the victory. However, soccer is a very difficult sport. There were times when we lost matches despite our team’s superior performance such as when we played against Sanfrecce Hiroshima and Nagoya Grampus in the past. We won the match today despite the fact that our opponent team outperformed our team. But, this is also part of playing soccer.

As a team manager, I make comment about our team’s performance honestly and clearly as to whether it was good or not after a match like the one we had today.

Though Kashima Antlers lost today’s match, their performance was fantastic. What I want to say clearly to the media is that Kashima’s performance was more deserving of the victory. I think Kashima’s performance should be commended for this reason. The fact that Urawa Reds players maintained their physical strength until the last moment of the match is something to be positively noted but we underperformed in the overall match today.
