Team Manager Mischa - press conference after the match against Gamba Osaka

Comment from Team Manager Mischa after the Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance Company J. League 1st Stage 9th Sec match against Gamba Osaka

Everyone here today must be aware of what had happened about half a year ago. Our team had a chance to win the J. League title last year. Yet, we were not able to nail the chance we had. Our mindset has changed after the opening of the new season. Having said that, the bitter feeling of the defeat we had at the end of last season has always remained in me. However, today’s match has helped me a little to clear the feeling of such deep regret.

Essentially, our team could have won the J. League title last year. However, soccer is a tough sport and no one can tell what might happen. Our team faced such a hard reality and lost the opportunity of winning the season title. In the past, our team often lost a goal after following the same pattern where they lost the ball in an unguarded moment though they controlled the ball in their possession for most of the time.

Before the match against Gamba Osaka this time, I told our team to be mindful of three points. I believe all the J. League teams are aware of the secret of Gamba Osaka’s strength. Even though that is the case, other teams are defeated by Gamba and they have won the J. League title three times in the past. I told our players about Gamba’s well-organized defense with an eight-layered block on their side of the pitch. I also told our team that Gamba Osaka is a team which relies on the initiatives and high quality performance of Patric and Usami who score goals following swift ball passes from their team players. The third point I told our team to be mindful of is Gamba’s set plays. They also ride on the strength of Endo’s high quality ball skills to score goals. These are the points everyone is aware of. Yet, their opponent players are not able to address these points and that is why Gamba Osaka has won the J. League title three times.

I have particularly requested our team during today’s match to watch out for and control the counter kicks of Patric and Usami as well as to manage risks. If our team allows those two Gamba players a few moments and space, they will create a dangerous situation for us. For this reason, I strongly asked our players to be swift when they switch from defense to offense. I think our players were very conscious of my requests while playing the match very patiently. Although Gamba Osaka’s performance was also great, I felt our team’s performance was more deserving of the victory.
