Team Manager Mischa and Captain Abe attend official interview session before the match against Sydney FC

An official AFC Champions League 2016 pre-match interview session was held at Saitama Stadium on 23 February ahead of the group stage MD1 match against Sydney FC which will be held the next day. Urawa Reds Team Manager Mischa and Captain Yuki Abe attended the interview session to express their excitement and determination as well as to answer questions by media.

Comment from Team Manager Mischa

First of all, I wish to say that we are honored and pleased to be able to play in the AFC Champions League on behalf of J. League teams.
This is our third time to play in the ACL over the past four years. We were not able to achieve good results last year as we lost during the group stage. For this reason, we have high motivations to perform better than last year and achieve good results for the ACL this year.

Having said that, it won’t be easy for us to do well as all four teams in our group are formidable and our opponent teams are on a par with us. Nonetheless, we will try to bring out our full potential in order to get through to the next stage. To start with, we will play against Sydney FC tomorrow. I regard Sydney FC highly as their performance is of a high level. In addition to this, they have already started their season and is in good momentum in terms of playing official matches. In comparison, we are in a challenging situation as the match we will play tomorrow will be our first official match for this season. But, we will do our utmost to play a good game tomorrow.

Sydney FC has already worked out their team strategies to some degree as they have played some official matches to date. Our team has prepared ourselves well for the new season over the last two months. However, in regards to the matches we have played so far, we have only played some training matches. As this is the case, we are yet to determine our team approach until we play a few official matches. In this sense, I feel that Sydney FC is in a better position than us. Having said that, we don’t have to make such excuses to ourselves. At any rate, we will put everything we have gained through our preparation into tomorrow’s match.

Comment from Captain Yuki Abe

Hello everyone. I feel that our season will finally start tomorrow though the ACL is starting before the J. League. We are getting more and more psyched up about the new season after we finished our training camps. We will do our best to achieve a top result tomorrow as the match will be a significantly important match for us. That’s all what we will do tomorrow.
