Team Manager Mischa – press conference after the match against Jeju United FC

Comment from Team Manager Mischa after the ACL Round 16 2nd leg match against Jeju United FC.

We had a very difficult and tough match. We lost the previous away match with the result of zero to two. During the away match, we had focused on not being defeated and scoring away goals. As the team manager, I don’t usually have the team meeting for three days to prepare for a match. But, during the meeting for the match, I reiterated the importance of not losing the ball as our opponent team has a real strength in executing counter attacks. By observing their past match against Gamba Osaka, we were able to see they were capable of executing sharp counter attacks from their compact and disciplined defense. However, once we started the match, it progressed in the way we didn’t intend as we were slow in our movements around the ball or were too quick to make attacks and lost the ball receiving counter attacks as a result.

During the first leg match, we had the ball for most of the time and the only chances our opponent team was able to create were through their counter attacks. I don’t think our opponent team created many scoring opportunities by breaking our attacks. Given the fact that we had a number of matches to play over a short period of time, four or five of our players were not in their one hundred percent conditions during the away match. Even though that was the case, we had created several good scoring chances. By taking these points into consideration, I was confident that our players were capable of scoring a few goals as long as we could take care of our opponent’s strength.

In 2013, when Urawa Reds played an ACL match against Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao F.C. and lost the match with zero to three, I made the comment that we would win the home match against them after the away match. I have also commented this time that we would win the home match after losing the away match against Jeju United FC with a result of zero to two. Personally, I didn’t think there was a significant difference between losing the match with zero to one or zero to two because we still have to score two goals in our home match even when we lose our away match with zero to one. Today, we won the match by scoring two goals to zero and scored a third goal during extra time to nail the victory. Though it was a difficult match, I didn’t have any doubt about us being able to win today’s match.
