Comment of the Gert Engels(Team-Manager)
I have deep regret. However, I would like to congratulate Gamba Osaka. It is certainly positive for Japan to have a Japanese team to play in the final match. But, I wanted us to play in the final game. Looking back at how we played the game, I think we played really well in the first half. We were able to play a pressing game and were able to create several opportunities with quick switches. Yamada had a nice shot and Takahara scored a goal and there were a few good counter attacks. Takahara also have a shot that hit the bar. Therefore, we were able to play very swiftly and so well.
In the second half of the game, I thought it would not be a good idea to be defensive. We were in a difficult position at first as our opponent changed their formation. However, I put Abe on the left and put Tsutsumi slightly more in the middle. After that, we were able to play better. However, it was such a shame that we lost 2 goals against the opponent’s set pieces soon after that and that happened in such a short period of time. Losing goals from set pieces hurts the most in any game. Once the score became 2 to 1, we obviously had to score 2 goals due to the away goal rule. For that reason, we had to go forward. But, the opponent team scored another goal with their counter attack, which made the score 3 to 1. Edmilson had a shot that hit the goal post. If the shot had scored a goal, our game might have taken a different course. However, the goal that made the score 3 to 1 was significant. We had to play the game with pride until the last minute of the game. But, unfortunately, we were not able to make a miracle happen. The result was the worst ever. But, the performances of players at given moments were quite good. The game we played was above our average over all.
