Team Manager Tsuyoshi Otsuki – Press Conference after the Match against Vissel Kobe

Comment from Team Manager Tsuyoshi Otsuki after the Meiji Yasuda J1 League 31st Sec Match against Vissel Kobe

We had a very difficult match today after having played a number of away matches in a row including our disappointing previous match. The latest two matches we played were the last home matches for our opponent teams. Although this created a challenging situation for us and given our current state, our team had managed to win the match thanks to the hard efforts made by our players. I feel really grateful for our team members for the victory.

Questions and Answers

Q: I believe you were really trying to build up the team and adjust the position of your anchor player during the first half of the match today. However, as for the second half, you put Leonardo into the team. Was it because you wanted your team to get to the ball quickly so that the risk of the team passing the ball amongst themselves at the back would be reduced?

A: No, not at all. As for making adjustments to the team’s positioning at the back, I had discussed the matter with the team during the cooling break in the first half of the match. I had pointed this out to the team again during half time. Having Leonardo join the team didn’t mean that we wouldn’t have to worry about building up the team. I told the team that they had to try to pass the ball to the top as soon as they could get the ball. I think what was important for us here was to keep a good balance.

Q: After having played a disappointing match recently, did you do anything special in terms of motivating your team members?

A: First of all, after having played the match against Yokohama F. Marinos on Saturday, we had to quickly shift our focus to Vissel Kobe. If we were to play against Yokohama again, we would have had to reflect on the match and work to address those points specific to playing against that team. However, after all, we were to play against Vissel Kobe as our next opponent. Secondly, what we could bring to the match playing against a different team would be only what we had been working on. As such, I had made sure that our team would go to the stadium well prepared by going through what we needed to do. I also had a discussion with our team with this very point in mind. Having said that, it wasn’t easy for us to quickly shift our focus to the next match as we found it was difficult to control our mental side since we played a disappointing match previously. However, our players tried to do their best over the past few days as well as during the match despite the challenges they had.

With regard to the pitch condition in the stadium, though it is a great pitch, we found it quite difficult to accustom ourselves to it in the beginning just like last season. Since this was the case, we were quite cautious at the beginning of the match especially until we had a cooling break. Nonetheless, our players had managed to control several important aspects as they started and progressed the match.

During the first half of the match, our team struggled to get the ball to the goal area and received a few counter attacks from there. However, it was all part of what we had anticipated to happen. After all, I feel very grateful that our players pulled out a strong performance today.
