Team Manager Tsuyoshi Otsuki – press conference after the match against Mito Hollyhock

Comment from Team Manager Otsuki after the Emperor’s Cup JFA 99th Japan Football Championship Third Round match against Mito Hollyhock

I shared the goal of moving to the next round with our players. I am very pleased that we fulfilled the goal today.

Questions and Answers

Q: It seemed as though your team had a wake-up call and started to pick up their play speed after they lost a goal today. What do you think about this?

A: I guess that losing a goal had some kind of impact on our players’ mental aspect. Mito Hollyhock started the match with a 4-1-4-1 system and changed to a 4-5-1 formation and our team moved accordingly. We had some open space towards the end of the match. As the match progressed and we caught up with the team and went ahead of our opponent, more space was created and what we had tried to achieve at the beginning of the match started to work out well for us. In this regard, we want to improve ourselves even further by reviewing the recorded footage of our performance. Further to that, though our team had the ball in our possession, our performance quality towards the end of the match, as we entered the goal area, was not good enough. If we struggle to do a good job, we should at least wear our opponent out by swaying the ball. Having said that, we had expected that the match would be a difficult one today.

Q: I understand that you started your professional coaching career at Mito Hollyhock. Given this, did you have any special feelings towards today’s match?

A: The fact of the matter is that the first official match I led as a professional coach was a match played by Mito Hollyhock against Urawa Reds in the Komaba stadium (currently known as Urawa Komaba Stadium). I am now a Team Manager of Urawa Reds and our team played today’s match against Mito Hollyhock here at the K's denki Stadium Mito. In reality, though I am more familiar with Kasamatsu Athletic Stadium and Hitachinaka City Athletic Stadium, I am sure I will remember today’s match played here in this stadium in the years to come. But, what is most important is that we have managed to go to the next round today. It is great that I can also feel the strong determination of our players, including those who joined the team mid-way through the season, to win the title. I believe their strong determination will carry us well through to the next match.

I told the team before the match that we should gain a good momentum for our success. I think our players answered my request positively today. There is still a lot to improve and I would like our team to continue to work to improve themselves day by day. That’s what I felt strongly after the match today.

Q: What was the reason you converted Moriwaki to the three-back middle position?

A: Because he was doing really well in this position during training. He had been practicing playing in this position throughout our training. He has what it takes to play in the position rather than just playing in his previous positions such as his cleverness. I thought we should make the most of his strengths. If he is capable of bringing some benefits to the team and has such a potential, I wanted to use him in the way he will benefit our team. He made me feel this way strongly and he did a great job playing in that position today.
