Team Manager Oswaldo Oliveira – press conference after the match against Vegalta Sendai

Comment from Team Manager Oliveira after the Meiji Yasuda J1 League 29th Sec match against Vegalta Sendai

We had expected to have a tough match but I trust that we pulled out a good performance. During the first half of the match in particular, we were able to create a good flow for ourselves to win the match. In reality, however, we couldn’t finish the match with a victorious result. Our team scored a goal really well. Though we created a few good scoring opportunities towards the end of the match, we were not able to nail these opportunities. As this was the case, we want to enhance our ability to make the most of such opportunities by playing more aggressively.

Questions and Answers

Q: It sounded like the team struggled to perform well during the second half of the match until the very end of the match. What were the points the team didn’t do well?

A: Both Sendai and our team have a number of high-quality players. Although both teams had developed a nice flow, I believe we Urawa Reds were more in control of the match and had made more scoring opportunities.

Q: With regard to the injury Takuya Aoki sustained, what is his current situation?

A: He will receive treatment and we will assess how he is but I don’t think it is that serious. I think he sprained his ankle. I think it will take a while for him to recover. But, we will have his condition monitored and checked on a round-the-clock basis if required to help him recover by our next match which will be held on the 20th of October. We still have some time before our next match. It was unfortunate that the plan I had in my mind for today’s match was not fulfilled as a result of the change of members due to him being replaced by another player.

Q: Though the team performed well today, what do you think of the team losing a goal from a set-piece play?

A: This was what I had told my team to be wary of and we had been working on. However, soccer is played with an opponent. This means that our opponent team did a good job. Conversely, we scored a goal in a similar manner and we had created two scoring opportunities today in this regard. What is important for us to do is to continue our training and decrease the number of free kick opportunities we give to our opponent team. When we provide such opportunities to our opponent, we must be able to defend and stop them scoring goals.

Q: With regard to the change of players, what was the original plan you had in your mind?

A: During today’s match, two players had to be replaced as a result of them sustaining injuries. Koroki had also sprained his ankle during the first half of the match though he had managed to stay with the team and play until mid-way through the second half of the match. If I didn’t have to change players as I did, I was hoping to put Lee in the front to form a two-top formation with Andrew to score more goals.
