Comment from Team Manager Oliveira after the Emperor’s Cup JFA 98th Japan Football Championship 3rd round match against Matsumoto Yamaga F.C.

Questions and Answers
Q: I am under the impression that what the team was working on during training and the training camp was evident in the match and in their performance today.

A: It is too early to determine whether all what we did during the mid-season break training has already translated into a good outcome. There are still many things we must work on. Nonetheless, it is certainly a pleasing fact that our team won today. Matsumoto Yamaga F.C. has recently been doing very well both in Cup matches and J2 League matches. They have many distinctive characteristics in their attacks and defense and they have recently been winning a number of matches in a row. For this reason, I trust that winning today’s home match against such a team was quite significant for our team. It was a great victory for us in order to continue with what we are now doing and to move forward on the path. Certainly, there are still many things that we must address. However, today’s victory gave us some confidence to move forward on the path we chose.

Q: Though scoring goals is not everything, how would you evaluate Maurício who scored two goals today?

A: Maurício has been working very hard to strengthen his high ball controlling skills and set-piece plays. Not only Maurício but also other players including Makino, Endo and Iwanami have been training hard in order to gain confidence to play outside of their defender role to score goals.

Q: You changed the formation during the second half of the match today by putting Abe in the team. What was your intention?

A: Firstly, I selected Makino and Endo as starting members and had a three-back formation again since they were showing a stable performance after their return from the World Cup. I had a three-back formation to start the match in order to have a solid defense. Secondly, I injected Abe mid-way through the second half of the match, as we needed to control the ball. At the same time, we needed to have both right and left back players to play in a higher position.

Q: What was the reason for having a two-top formation from mid-way through the second half?

A: We had a situation where all our players were playing closer to the front line. By having a two-top formation, Koroki and Muto as well as Kashiwagi were able to play one-on-one and this was my intention.

Q: How do you evaluate Kashiwagi and Endo who have returned from the World Cup? Makino assisted Maurício when he scored a goal today.

A: What you saw today was the result of our training. It was the case of a center back player making attacks in our opponent’s penalty area. There is no doubt that both Makino and Endo are top class National Team players. Now that we have them back, the team can play more confidently with them.
