New Year Kite-Flying & Rice Cake Making Festival at RedsLand

The 4th “New Year Kite-Flying & Rice Cake Making Festival” was held with the support of JA Group Saitama at RedsLand on 12th January. 113 people split into 34 groups participated in the event.

The participants started by making kites on the 2nd floor of RedsLand Club House. Under the instruction of staff, both children and adults drew pictures and completed their hand-made kites.

Then, they moved to a free space at RedsLand with the kites they made themselves. It was fair weather in Saitama City. It was unusual for RedsLand in winter that the wind was not strong. However, the participants were able to use the wind and flew their kites high into the fine sky.

After the kite-flying event which was held until early afternoon, they made rice cakes by using mortar and pestle. Children cheered while fathers pounded steamed rice into cake. The rice cake made was then offered to the participants together with pork soup.

After the meal, children were grouped according to their age and played the karuta (card) game. Lastly, the best kite award was given to Yoshimasa Anzai (8 years old, Kawaguchi City) who made “Overhead” kite, Ayaka Takahashi (8 years old, Urawa Ward, Saitama City) who made “Emblem” and Tetsuya Tsuji (12 years old, Higashi-Matsuyama City) who made “Emblem + Ox”. They received the table calendar with players’ autographs.

The best award kites will be exhibited in the RedsLand booth of “REDS Festa 2009” which will be held at Saitama Super Arena on 31st January.
