Team Manager Tsuyoshi Otsuki – Press Conference after the Match against Oita Trinita

Comment from Team Manager Tsuyoshi Otsuki after the Meiji Yasuda J1 League 25th Sec Match against Oita Trininta

Both teams played hard for the 90 minutes but finished the match by gaining one point each in a draw. I am sure we both wanted to gain three points instead. That was the type of game we played today.

Questions and Answers

Q: Oita Trinita had nearly two weeks to prepare for today’s match and I thought they seemed to have maneuvered themselves rather well today. Were there any points that you didn’t like about playing against them?

A: I felt that they didn’t allow us to pick up speed today, especially during the first half of the match. Yamanaka had managed to cover behind our opponent team on the left side a few times. It would have been better had he been able to do this more often today. But, our opponent progressed the match without allowing us many of these opportunities. I wanted our team to express themselves better by scoring the first goal today despite going through such a frustrating situation. However, it was not possible for us to do so.

Q: Your team had one week to prepare for the match. I trust it’s been a while since your team played against an opponent team that had a three-back formation. Were there any points that you felt your team could have done better during today’s match?

A: It would have been good had our team been able to do better in our offense such as how we moved the ball around and how we moved ourselves forward. Since we had no idea about who would be the starting members of our opponent team and how they would play against us during our training, it was necessary for us to adjust ourselves as we played the match today. I was hoping that we would make better adjustments after half time etc.

As for the second half of the match, since our opponent team started to lose some of their strengths, our team was able to hold the ball for some time. It would have been good had we been able to catch them off guard to create some scoring opportunities for ourselves.

Q: Your team will be playing against Sanfrecce Hiroshima in three days’ time who is also likely to play in a three-back system. Considering this, did you find anything helpful from playing today’s match to prepare for the upcoming match?

A: Sanfrecce Hiroshima and Oita Trinita are different teams after all. We will do our best to prepare for the next match.

Q: I thought your team pulled themselves together during the second half of the match. What exactly were the points that improved in the second half?

A: I talked with the team how we could improve ourselves in terms of our movements at the back and positioning at the start of the second half. In addition to what we had discussed, our players made their own good judgements to create better moments for the team. Having said that, we couldn’t bring ourselves to the quality level we needed to finish off the match nicely. We wish to get to that level by working hard.

Q: Though there are still some limitations, away team fans and supporters can also come to the stadium to cheer for their team from today. How did you feel about seeing your fans and supporters in Urawa Reds uniforms in the away stadium today?

A: They have come all the way to Kyushu and some of them cheered us up at the airport yesterday. I am sure the number of our fans who come to the match stadium will increase more and more from now on including those who travel to our away match stadiums. We want to give everything we can so that we can respond positively to their expectations. We will try to do our best in the next match, too.
