Comment from Team Manager Tsuyoshi Otsuki and Shinzo Koroki after the AFC Champions League 2019 Round 16 2nd leg match against Ulsan Hyundai FC

Comment from Tsuyoshi Otsuki
I am pleased that our team is moving to the next round. I am relieved for that. Not only our players worked hard but also the morale boost we received from our fans and supporters at the end of the previous match in our stadium as well as during the match today made it possible for us to attain today’s outcome. I would like to express my sincere thanks to them for this.

Comment from Shinzo Koroki
We had a very challenging match today. But, we had solid training throughout the past week and the outcome of the training was evident in regards the positive outcome we had. We are very pleased that lots of our fans and supporters came to the stadium to see us and we were able to give them the winning points today.

Questions and Answers

Q: What did you induct for your players to come from behind during the match today in terms of the game plan? How do you also evaluate the achievement?

Otsuki: It was not just today’s match that we were working to fulfill a specific game plan. It was a follow on from the first leg match. Since we finished the last match with the result of 1 to 2, I cannot comment anything in particular regarding the previous match. However, as far as our game plan was concerned, we were not widely off from what we intended to achieve. It was a pity that we lost goals during the first leg math.

We had analyzed the content of the first leg match thoroughly and I told our players that though it is easy to see something that didn’t go well it is important for us not to overlook what we had built up to date while training extensively. The result we had today might have been too good to believe. But, I said to the team that we would be able to pull out a satisfactory level of performance during today’s match if we can continue to build on our strengths further.

Q: This question is for Koroki, what do you think you improved as you scored two goals and the team scored three goals in total during the match today? As for a question for Team Manager Otsuki, what did you have in mind to change on the pitch when you replaced your team members?

Koroki: During the previous home match in Urawa, though we had created several good opportunities, we were not able to nail those opportunities we had created. However, we were able to make the most of the chances we had created today. The fact that we nailed a chance we created one by one made it possible for us to win the match today.

Otsuki: With regard to changing players, I wanted to make sure our team has enough stamina, enough numbers of those who would be able to move into the space in front of the goal. I also wanted to put pressure on our opponent team by changing the type of weapon we had. When I put Nagasawa in, we changed our system. I shared my intention with the team and it was good that things went smoothly as I intended.

Q: What kind of measures did your team take to play against Ulsan Hyundai FC?

Otsuki: Ulsan Hyundai FC move across the pitch with high speed. As such, we had prepared ourselves to counter that for both the previous and today’s matches. With regard to the difference between the previous and today’s matches, our team performed more firmly and our opponent team was the one who struggled more this time. Before the match, we discussed many different types of strategies and tactics with our players but I told them that we had to take an upper position on the pitch. I believe we outperformed today in this regard and I am very proud of our players’ performance today.
