Comment from Team Manager Tsuyoshi Otsuki after the Meiji Yasuda J1 League 11th Sec Match against Gamba Osaka

I am grateful for our team that they kept their condition and emotional motivation high despite the recent extremely hot weather and tight match schedule.

Questions and Answers

Q: After the previous match against Sanfrecce Hiroshima, you commented that the team was really determined to win the match no matter what. How was the team mentally prepared for today’s match?

A: During the pre-match interview before the match against Nagoya Grampus earlier, I mentioned that the team was becoming increasingly capable of executing something which they could not do well in the past. However, we made the Nagoya Grampus match a difficult match as we failed to show what we were capable of. Our players had been trying to gain our strength back since that match and I think they worked really hard not just physically but also mentally.

Our players showed great motivation and put out a great performance during today’s match too. Winning today’s match was also a good experience for me. I hope our players continue to perform well in their next match without feeling complacent about today’s win. I felt grateful to see our players’ high motivation and great performance during today’s match.

Q: As for Ugajin, did you have him in the team to be in a defense position?

A: When our opponent team started to come forward more during the second half of the match, especially after our team was leading the match with a good margin, the team was quite careful to keep a good balance as a whole. But during the first half of the match, Ugajin helped to establish a dominant position for the team on the left side as well as to create several opportunities for the team to make attacks. He is not just a good defender but also capable of more. He can fulfill great tasks by being in the position he was in today.

Q: I think the team did a fantastic job today. However, their performance is not quite consistent. Do you think the team is yet to be solid in terms of what they are good at and what they are not?

A: Personally, I don’t think describing the team as not solid is not the right expression to use for the team. The team is now capable of showing good performances for a longer time than they used to, and I can see more positive aspects in their performance. The team is also trying to do even better. So, we are currently at a stage where we can develop even further. For this reason, rather than assessing their performance based on simply whether they played a good match or bad match, I want to make sure they are developing themselves consistently by taking small steps at a time.

Q: I trust that you feel the team played the 90-minute match as a united team today. You mentioned before the match that it was important for the team to have a sense of unity and play coherently as a team especially given the hot weather. Following that, I thought the team seemed to have had a sense of unity and they were playing in good coordination in many regards, especially in their offensive. What did you think about this?

A: I will continue to work hard with the team so that we can perform like we did today again. I will do our best with our players.
