Onaiwu: "We need to improve on our weaknesses, switch gears, and aim for three points in the next match."
On the 14th, after MEIJI YASUDA J1 100 YEAR VISION LEAGUE Round 6 match against Tokyo Verdy, Ado Onaiwu spoke about his reflections on Trial and his aspirations for the next match.
(What were your impressions watching the first half of Trial from the bench?)
"I think we started off pretty well, but after losing possession in our own half, we conceded a goal, and from there, I felt it became difficult to maintain team balance and create rhythm in our attack."
(I imagine there were some difficult moments in the first half, but in the second half, when Onaiwu came on, what kind of instructions did the manager give him?)
"The instruction was to create good chances by utilizing the starting point of the attack and the relationship with Renji (Hidano) in front of the goal."
(Did the coach give any advice to the team as a whole?)
"We wanted to clarify what we needed to do when we had the ball, and to win evenly matched balls in terms of intensity and duels."
(In the second half, Onaiwu clearly came on and changed the rhythm of the game. Was there anything you were conscious of when you went into the second half?)
"First and foremost, we played with the intention of doing what we usually try to do and showcasing our own strengths."
(In the second half, you created some chances from crosses, but what do you think is necessary to break down an opponent that is sitting deep?)
"The opponent had a solid defensive block in their own half, so I think we weren't able to break through that today."
There are areas where we need to improve, such as the quality of our attacking play in the final stages, the shared understanding among players about how to break down the opponent, and technical skills. If we could also increase our intensity in front of the goal, I think we could have created several chances. If we can improve the precision of each individual player, the quality of our crosses, and the timing of our runs, I think we can create more scoring opportunities."
(You played for 45 minutes today. Is there anything you would like to ask of the team, Onaiwu?)
"I'm not in a position to say anything authoritative, but we had 45 minutes in the second half, which is longer than last time, and we were down 0-1 at halftime, so I was hoping to score at least one goal, but I'm really frustrated that I couldn't do that."
As I mentioned earlier, we need to improve the quality of our play in front of the goal, the quality of our crosses, and the timing of our runs. We also need a stronger atmosphere where everyone is determined to score goals, and each player needs to be strong and not lose in duels.
Today, we conceded quite a few long balls, and I think there were many instances where the opposing forwards were able to use those as a starting point for attacks. I think we should be a bit more cunning in those situations, and if we can do things that the opponent dislikes and put stress on them, and then win the ball back into possession, we'll be able to create more attacking opportunities and more space.
I think there were some good points, and I hope to continue those throughout the series of matches while improving on the areas where we went wrong."
(You haven't spent that much time back in Japan yet, but how's your condition?)
"The situation is certainly different, but I think my feel for it has improved compared to when I played at home last time."
I believe that for forwards, results are the most important thing, so even in difficult Trial, there are times when scoring a goal, even if you haven't done anything else, can make all the difference. In that sense, I want to contribute through goals and assists."
(There are only three days until the next match, so time is limited. What do you want to accomplish as a team during this time?)
"If we can improve the quality of our attacking play in the final attacking area, I think we'll create more chances and goals. I believe we have players with the quality to do that, so I think it would be good if we could align our vision in that area and share a common understanding of how the team should attack."
(Kashiwa Reysol will also be using a three-man defense in the next match, but what lessons can you learn from today's game to apply to that opponent?)
"I don't think there's any need to feel intimidated by it, and I believe there will be open spaces, even if they're in different forms. If we can all find those spaces together and use them effectively, it will become an opportunity. I think communication will be the most important thing in that regard."
(What are your aspirations for the next match?)
"We didn't get any points today, so we need to improve the quality of our final play. Next time, we'll be playing at home, and we'll all switch gears and work hard to get three points in front of our fans and supporters."
