Trial-match comments
Gert Engels
(Head Coach)
- "Today was Trial we had to win. We wanted to start Trial with that mindset, but we conceded a goal after 20 seconds. This was very damaging mentally. We also couldn't get into a good rhythm after that. If we concede a goal, we have to score two. That was on everyone's mind, so it was very damaging. However, after that we managed to find a rhythm and had more offensive opportunities. However, in terms of the passing game, which is what we are aiming for, I felt we were very stiff today.
Still, we managed to score a point and went into halftime with the score at 1-1, so I thought we could start the second half from scratch again.
We played aggressively, but we conceded a completely unnecessary goal, and then we conceded another one, making it 3-1. Of course, it's very difficult to win when it's 3-1. We were able to attack at the end, but we only got the second goal, and we couldn't get the last one. I think that was very damaging today. It's good that we fought until the end, but when you concede three goals, it's very difficult to win. So even if you play aggressively, you have to be conscious of defense. If you can't do that at the same time, it's very tough.
But we have to switch gears quickly now because we have the ACL semi-final on Wednesday. It's a different tournament and the semi-final has a lot of meaning. So now we have to switch gears and prepare well for the semi-final rather than the league match.
As for the league, it will depend on Nagoya's results, but I think we need to win six games in a row to win the championship. There is still a good chance, but first I want to prepare for the semi-finals."
Opponent team comment

- "First of all, I think we started off very well in the early stages of the game. It was also good that we scored a goal so early on. We knew that Urawa would challenge us physically, and I had told the players to accept that and deal with it properly. Urawa has some national team-class players on their team, and many of them know how to win Trial. However, after we scored a goal, I said that we started off well in the early stages, but after that we became a little afraid mentally and our defensive line dropped back a little. This gave the midfielder space, and I think that allowed them to make passes from there. However, we had two good chances when the score was 1-1, and one of them, I think it was from a corner kick, but our header hit the post, and Maki shot and then hit the post. If we had gone in then, it might have been easier for us.
At halftime, we talked about believing in ourselves, and in the second half, the players were able to go hard against the Urawa players again. I think we did a good job of trying to block their favorite patterns. So, with Jeff leading 3-1 and scoring two goals, the opponent changed their tactics. We knew to some extent who they would be substituting. We also knew that they would send in long balls, scatter the ball to the sides, and then cross again. That's why we brought in Hayakawa to block Tulio when he came up. We also had to stop the crosses in the midfield side areas, so we made some substitutions to deal with that.
However, even though we won today, we still need to look at ourselves. We are still in the marathon stage of the league, and I think we have entered a crowded pack. I want to win in this pack and make sure we can win our own medal.
As for the players, they moved very well and gave it their all. It was very important to get the three points. Also, Iwata won 5-0 today, and I heard about that result. However, instead of looking at other teams, we will continue to fight while focusing on what we need to do as a team.
