Trial-match comments

Mihailo Petrovic

(Head Coach)

"After playing against an opponent like today, it is very difficult to make any comments. As you all know, Kofu is a team that plays like that. They are by no means an easy opponent for us.

For the past three years, Kofu has been a team that has achieved results by focusing on defense. We played with a very high ball possession rate, and I think we created several scoring opportunities in the first half, but we couldn't score. I think the opponent's Cristiano stayed up front and was aiming to counterattack after stealing the ball, but Abe and Endo took good care of him and defended without giving the opponent any chance to counter.

With the opponent down one player due to a red card, they were forced to defend more decisively. For the Reds, this put them at a disadvantage compared to when they had 10 field players on the field.

With the opponent being sent off, we were left with nine field players. If we had 10 players, after we stole the ball, we could kick it forward and Cristiano could keep it, and if some players came in to support us on the counter, we could find the opponent's space after we stole the ball and attack from there. However, with the opponent being sent off, it became a situation where the opponent could not come out at all. After Cristiano was substituted, the opponent could only receive our attacks and bounce them back, which made it difficult for us.

Even in those conditions, I think the players remained patient, moved the ball around, and repeatedly attacked while searching for opportunities to attack. That's what led to the two great goals.

However, there was one thing I didn't like about this game, and that was the final goal we conceded. After we were up 2-0, it seemed to me that in our efforts to score the third or fourth goal, we were too eager to score or were playing around too much.

We often watch videos of the German Bundesliga, such as Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. They have the mentality to score the third, fourth, and fifth goals even after being down 2-0, and to beat their opponents to the end. They maintain their discipline and concentration until the end, and do not waste their chances because of their ego to want to score. They keep scoring until the end, and repeat. In the end, I am very angry that we conceded a goal. I would like to talk to the players and improve on that point.

I think we can give credit to the team for winning today's Trial. Because Kofu is a team that is particularly strong away from home. They beat Kobe in the league and drew with Tosu. They beat Kashima in the Nabisco Cup. They lost at home in the league, but they got points away from home. As evidenced by that, you can see how they are showing their strength away from home. That's why today's Trial was not as easy as people think. There's no doubt about that. I want to give credit to the players for winning. However, I don't think the last goal was necessary.

In today's game, for example, if we didn't make any moves, the other team wouldn't even try to get the ball. Trial would probably have ended 0-0 without anything happening for 90 minutes, with both teams getting one point. Of course, if we drew in such Trial, the critics would be us.

We have to take risks and attack against opponents who play that way. We may concede goals on the counter. But we are a team that has to attack aggressively. But it's interesting to hear that the Reds have to do that because they have more quality."

Opponent team comment

Satoru Sakuma

(Head Coach)

"We had two Nabisco Cup Trial in between, and in terms of league matches, we lost 0-4 at Yamanashi Chuo Bank Stadium in the previous Trial. We beat Kashima in the Nabisco Cup, and had a satisfactory Trial against Omiya, so we went into Trial hoping to take advantage of that momentum and put up a good fight against Urawa Urawa Reds at Saitama Stadium, or at least get some revenge.

However, throughout the league games, we felt that our wings were coming under a lot of attack, so today we decided to go in with a more practical approach, putting Cristiano at the top and putting Kawamoto on the wing.

In the first half, the players were very enthusiastic because the opponent was the Reds at Saitama Stadium, which is now known as the holy ground of soccer. The timing of the two defensive midfielders to apply pressure was a little earlier than usual, and they were often penalized in the 10th or 15th minute of the first half, so I coached them a lot from the bench, but in the end, Yamamoto got a yellow card for trying to erase it early, and things calmed down for a while, but for the second yellow card, he got an unlucky yellow card and was unfortunately sent off early. It was very difficult to play against the Reds for a long time with only nine men, but even after we were reduced to nine men, the game was going the way we wanted it to.

At halftime, we reorganized our thinking about the three defensive midfielders, and decided to defend with nine players, with Cristiano playing as the lone striker and launching counterattacks. After 15 minutes, we thought that Zlatan would come in and attack the flanks, and crosses would come up, so we decided to take Cristiano out, go with a six-man backline, and aggressively challenge for vertical balls. The moment we made the substitution, the backline's cooperation was poor, and we were defeated, which was very disappointing. As for the second goal, it was a great shot, so I think it couldn't be helped.

After we conceded the goal, we went back to our original system, put Yoshino up front, and tried to create an opening for our attack. We didn't have many chances, but we managed to score one in the end. I'd like to thank the players for their efforts until the very end, and the supporters for coming all the way to our away stadium and cheering loudly until the very end.

After this, we have the Nabisco Cup, and our main player Yamamoto will be suspended for the league match. We will once again put together a strong team and prepare for the next league Trial.
