Trial-match comments
Mihailo Petrovic
(Head Coach)
- "It was the J.League's 20th anniversary Trial, so it's no coincidence that the two clubs faced off in such a game, given their track records. Kashima is the team that has won the most titles in the past 20 years, and Urawa Reds are the team that attracts the most spectators. If you look at the atmosphere in the stadium today, only we, Urawa Reds, can create this atmosphere, and today's game was a tense one, fitting for a commemorative Trial. Both teams fought well, and it wouldn't have been surprising if Kashima had won. We ended up winning, but it was a very close game. I think the 20th anniversary Trial was a good game that made an appeal to society."
Opponent team comment
Tonino Cerezo
(Head Coach)
- "Please start with the Q&A session."
(Kashima had some typical scoring chances up until about the 30th minute of the first half. What do you think was the reason they couldn't score?)
"We created many chances in the areas we were trying to do. I don't think the players were unable to score. Creating chances is the most important thing, and I believe we played in a way that was worthy of our 20th anniversary. The players on both teams did what they were supposed to do, and with our higher average age and our opponents being younger, it was expected that they would step up the tempo in the second half. We also had the lead, so we expected that to happen. I believe the players played in a way that was worthy of our 20th anniversary. I believe we were able to put in that kind of performance.
I think that the people who came to the stadium today and those who watched this Trial on TV were expecting to see a great show. I feel that the quality of the players has improved in 20 years. However, although I am not an expert in that field, anyone can see that the refereeing has unfortunately not changed in the last 20 years and has stagnated.
(You exchanged greetings with Koroki before Trial. What do you think of him? If you were to say something to him, who would it be?)
"He has a great club, great supporters, a great organization and a great coach. The three-back formation is also brave in possession, and the two wing-backs play the role of wings during attacks. The defensive midfielders also drop back during attacks to form a four-back formation. The defensive midfielders join the attack. He and the two shadow players have a great coach, are young and skilled, and the players up front are highly skilled and capable. I think he is very happy right now. I think he feels blessed. I was the first coach when Koroki was in his first year, so I exchanged a quick greeting with him. I think this is a common sight in the world of soccer."
(Urawa Reds have five players up front when attacking, so a four-man back line would put them at a numerical disadvantage. How did you plan to respond?)
"I don't think it's a big problem. The most dangerous situation is when one of the centre-backs joins the attack and uses up the space, and basically the wing-backs and the full-backs are watching. The centre is a problem, as we have two shadow midfielders who try to work behind our defensive midfielders, so we have to be careful there.
We have to take care of that, but if the center backs join the attack, they will be outnumbered, so our side halves have to keep them in check and pass the ball to the center, or to the two shadow players who can pass the ball from the center backs to the sides. I think we did well in terms of tactics, but it's difficult to keep it up for 90 minutes, and although we were functioning well in the first half, we lost power in the second half. The average age is high, so that was expected, but both teams are always playing soccer aiming for the goal, so I think it was Trial that conveyed the fun of soccer to the spectators.
Basically, soccer is 11 vs 11, and the field is 10 vs 10, so as long as each player is responsible for their own marking, there is no problem. However, you have to send players onto the pitch with tactics and goals, but the other team also has very talented players, so it's not like that will work perfectly. But basically, it's 11 vs 11.
