Trial-match comments
Mihailo Petrovic
(Head Coach)
- "In the first half, we struggled to build up the ball from the back or carry the ball well, and we struggled to play our own game. Perhaps the players were a little nervous going into Trial, as we struggled to build up the play, getting stuck in the middle or just kicking long balls, and it was a first half where we were unable to show our strengths. Today's game was played in very humid conditions, so it was not an easy game for the players either. As I said in the press conference yesterday, we started on January 15th and have been working almost without a break since. I think the players are more tired than we thought, especially in this extremely hot summer.
The first half ended with the score at 0-0, but the players may have thought that a 0-0 score was OK. I think that this mindset contributed to the poor start to the second half. Urawa Reds is a team that is always expected to win. In the previous match against Yokohama F・Marinos, they overwhelmed their opponents and ended up with a 0-0 draw, but they should know that they are not a team that can be evaluated based on that. That is why we should not be satisfied with a 0-0 score at halftime and a strategy of scoring a point somewhere.
I may be the only one of many managers who commented that we are still not doing well after winning 3-1 away against FC Tokyo. We were trailing 1-0 early in the second half, but that woke the players up and made them feel that they needed to take more risks and be more courageous and aggressive. I think being trailing 0-1 ignited the players' enthusiasm.
In today's game, we created scenes where it would not have been strange if we had scored four or five points in the end. What I think was very good was that after we took a 2-1 lead, the players never let up on their attacks and showed an attitude of going for the third, fourth, and fifth goals. It is common in Japanese soccer that, once you take a lead, you try to protect that lead in the final stages and win. I think that if the opponent shows a gap, we need to take more points and be more aggressive in Japanese soccer, so that we can crush them even more. I usually talk about this to the players, but in today's game, the players expressed it on the pitch.
This is a story from a long time ago in a German league game, when the coach was Mr. Happel and Mr. Magath was still a player. With a 1-0 lead and heading into the final minutes, the opposing team replaced their stopper with a forward to play more offensively. In response, we went to the coach to ask if we should replace our forward with a stopper. Coach Happel understood, and at that time the coach replaced one of the defenders with an offensive player. After that substitution, the team scored a second, third, and fourth goal and won Trial. I learned something from watching those Trial.
It's a way of thinking, but the opponent must score, and will take risks by using a large number of players to attack, and if you try to defend against that and go on the defensive, you may be defeated by the pressure over time. If the opponent attacks, on the other hand, there will be space, so if you put an offensive player there, it will be easier to score than when the opponent is playing defensively. That's one way of thinking. In Japan, the mindset is relatively common to defend until the end if you take the lead, but I think it would be good to have the opposite mindset of playing an offensive card and going on the offensive.
To sum up, we didn't play well in the first half, but in the second half, even though we were trailing, the players woke up and showed their courage in playing our own style. I think we played a game worthy of winning. There were differences between the first and second halves of the game, but I'm glad we were able to win, and I'm glad we were able to see that difference for ourselves. We have important Trial coming up against Hiroshima and Gamba next, so we want to keep challenging ourselves and fight in those games to keep our good periods going for a long time."
Opponent team comment
Yoshiyuki Shinoda
(Head Coach)
- "First of all, it's really disappointing and frustrating that it turned out like this, and I feel sorry for the supporters.
As for the game, I think the entry was exactly what I was aiming for. I think I got it. In order to erase Urawa's strengths, we forced them to press more and more. As a result, we were able to score a goal at the beginning of the second half. I tried to hold back the change. In the midst of that, when (Nakajima) Shoya and (Hashimoto) Kento entered the side in place of Shoya, I think I had a chance to score the second goal, but I was able to win the game. It was very disappointing because I couldn't close it tightly.
However, after that, I was caught up, and the center of gravity was lowered a little too far back, and I was chasing separately. increase.
Our players put pressure on us at a high pace in the first half, and I think it would have been better if we could have been able to spend a little more time in the front. The players did well, and we also saw some issues. It would have been great if we could have played against Urawa like this, and if we could have won the match throughout the 90 minutes. Anyway, it was a frustrating game."
