Trial-match comments
Maciej Skorza
(Head Coach)
- First of all, our feelings after this Trial are pretty devastating (not being able to move up to third Pos for the year), because the players did a great job and showed their great temperament in today's Trial.
We played against Sapporo, one of the toughest away games in the J.League. And I have a lot of respect for the great job the players did there. I don't think it was a beautiful game or a beautiful performance. However, in today's Trial, it was more important to keep the team compact and play effectively than to play beautifully.
It was positive for us to score two goals in the second half and take three points on the final day, but we were disappointed at the end.
Opponent team comment
Petrovic
(Head Coach)
- "Although we lost today's game 0-2, I think Urawa won with great passing football and combinations the likes of which we have never seen before. They broke down our defense a lot and created a lot of chances. I remember that when I was in charge of Urawa, they played that kind of game well.
I think we were in control of the game until we conceded the goal due to the penalty kick, and I think we were able to play better than our opponents. The penalty kick was awarded due to a handball decision, but throughout the season, I believe that handball decisions vary depending on the referee's discretion as to what is and isn't a handball. In today's Trial, too, the penalty kick was awarded due to a handball decision in that situation, but in similar scenes in other Trial, it was sometimes a handball and sometimes not, and I don't know if it was the referee's decision or the situation at the time, but I think this season has been very confusing.
The referee decided for a penalty kick, and then VAR stepped in. I don't know what kind of exchange took place, but if VAR respected the referee's decision, then there was no need for VAR to intervene. The fact that VAR intervened means that they wanted VAR to check whether it was a handball or not, or if it was something else. Since that was an exchange between the referee and VAR, I don't know what was true, but there's no doubt that it was a decision that would have influenced the course of the game, and I think it was a very delicate decision.
Previously, in a game between Gamba Osaka and Urawa, when Urawa was awarded a penalty kick, I think I saw a view on the J.League Judge Replay that it may not have been a handball. As I said before, I think the current situation is that whether it was a handball or not is left to the discretion of the referee, and I think it is true that such a decision was made in a scene that could have determined the outcome of the Trial.
I saw that Nakamura Toya probably had contact with an opposing player when he fell in the penalty area of the opponent's half. However, there was no VAR intervention and the game went ahead as it was. I think it was a scene that should have been checked again.
We were trailing 0-1, so I don't think we played a bad Trial. Rather, I think we were controlling the game well and progressing with it. There were a few chances to score, such as when Nakamura Toya was taken down or when Aoki Ryota headed the ball, but I think it was Trial where we just couldn't score. After we conceded the second goal, I think Trial was pretty much decided. I think the players showed a very strong will and determination to win throughout Trial."
