Trial-match comments
Volker Finke
(Head Coach)
- "I think we were able to watch a thrilling, very interesting and intense Trial. All our players were very committed and played with a strong fighting spirit until the very end.
So, it's really frustrating that we weren't able to convert our chances into goals at the very last moment, probably because we lacked a bit of cleverness in the opponent's penalty area.
However, I don't think that the football we were able to show on the pitch was something we should be ashamed of. There were some areas where we improved dramatically on the pitch, and we were able to show some very good plays. However, we have now reached a point where we need to take the next step. That means turning our excellent Trial into results, and especially scoring in crucial moments. This is something we need to solve, and I think this will be our challenge from next year onwards."
Opponent team comment
Akira Nishino
(Head Coach)
- "I think we fought well today as well. Both teams played in a compact game with the midfield in mind, which we had expected, and while not placing much emphasis on scoring, it was a matter of who would take the initiative in the midfield. Both teams are known for possession and passing, so we didn't want to lose the ball in the midfield, and so we started with some defensive-style players in the midfield, but it wasn't a formation aimed at a defensive game. We wanted to increase our chances to attack, and in the first half we placed more emphasis on stealing the ball in the midfield, and we were able to take some decisive chances, so to an extent we were able to play Trial as we had planned. We didn't have much of a finish, and even though we didn't score (points), we didn't rush to win, and we didn't rush into it, so we controlled the game well. I think we were able to fight well, but I felt that the moment we switched, we were a little shaky. We brought in Takashi (Usami) and went for an offensive approach, but when we changed the midfield formation from flat to diamond, we gave a lot of space to the wings, Okamoto and Ugajin, and that's how it ended up, but anyway, in the first half of extra time, we tried to keep the formation and push forward with an offensive midfield formation. We told ourselves that if we were unbalanced, we would go back to a box formation from a flat formation, and we were able to win well within that. I think Sasaki and Yamaguchi both performed well. It's unique to the Emperor's Cup, and you have to win a close game like this, and like the previous three Trial, you have to persevere and then make a change somewhere to break through. I think it was a game where everyone understood the game plan well and fought well."
