Urawa Reds’ daily practice routine takes place at Ohara. The ground is owned by Saitama City but in fact the club has almost exclusive use of the facilities. There are two full-sized grass pitches, one smaller all-weather court with an artificial grass surface, and a club house that was completely rebuilt in 2004. It is all located in a quiet district 3.5 kilometres north from the city centre. Urawa Reds’ forerunner, Mitsubishi Football Club, had its own ground in the city of Chofu in western Tokyo, and the search for a new training centre was a major issue when the club first moved. The Ohara ground was eventually furnished in July, 1993. You only need to visit Ohara on any ordinary weekday to appreciate the strength of Reds’ local support. Several hundred fans turn up even on the wettest days to see the players train. The club house had only a single storey until 2003 but was enlarged in 2004 for the benefit of not only players and staff but also those fans, who previously had access only to a standing area behind the perimeter fence. The new two storey club house, built in January, 2004, has changing rooms, bathing space, a massage room and a medical clinic on the ground floor, and the manager’s office, players’ lounge, press room and a 90 square metre Supporters’ Cafe´ upstairs. Fans can now enjoy their drinks while watching scenes of Reds games on a giant 42 inch TV, or step onto the veranda to watch the training directly from the house. About 200 bright red seats have also been provided beside the ground outside. When training is over, the fans line up at the players’ entrance for autographs and souvenir photographs. The Reds players cooperate with everyone who asks. Ohara Training Ground is not only a base for building the team, but also a place for enabling close and friendly contact with supporters. The Supporters’ Cafe opens from an hour before the start of training. The large window on the right commands a tremendous view fo the ground. Drinks and snacks are available from vending machines, enabling supporters to watch the training in complete comfort.
