Match Preview
With a tight schedule of three Trial in about a week, Urawa Reds will face FC Machida Zelvia at Saitama Stadium on March 22nd, just three days after their match against Kashiwa Reysol Trial in their third match of the season.
Machida, despite being only in their third season since being promoted to J1 for the first time in the club's history, secured a spot in the AFC Champions League in 2024 by finishing third in the J1 League. Last season, they won the Emperor's Cup, their first-ever title. Their J1 record against Urawa is even, with one win, two draws, and one loss. Urawa, on the other hand, has not been able to win at home in Saitama Stadium (one draw and one loss), so they will be looking to secure a victory in this Trial.
As one of the so-called "Original 10" clubs that have been involved with the J.League since its inception in 1993, and possessing a strong tradition, they will be looking to demonstrate their strength against the "newcomer" clubs that are only in their third year in J1.
One of Machida's strengths is its solid defense. In 2024, they conceded the fewest goals in the league with 34 in 38 Trial, and in 2025, they conceded 38 in 38 Trial, keeping their average goals conceded over the past two seasons to less than one. At the back of this defense is goalkeeper Kosei Tani, who is also a member of the Japanese national team. This season, he has been instrumental in helping the team earn points, including saving two penalties in the penalty shootout against Mito Hollyhock in the second match of the season.
In contrast, Urawa's guardian, Shusaku Nishikawa, shows no signs of slowing down even as he approaches 40, and is in no way inferior to Tani. He will undoubtedly provide a sense of security to the team with his positive encouragement and make crucial saves to prevent goals when it matters most.
In addition to the outstanding performances of both goalkeepers, the match between the two teams will feature a high-intensity, fierce battle for the ball throughout the entire team. With many "future Reds supporters" gathering for GoGoReds! Day, the excitement and emotion felt at the stadium are sure to be something special.
