MEIJI YASUDA J1 100 YEAR VISION LEAGUE
Regional League Round 4 vs Kashima Antlers
Column
In their opening home game of 2026, Urawa Reds will face Kashima Antlers.
The opening home game is already a big draw, but when the opponent is Kashima, it becomes even more so. The two teams, known as the "Original 10," have been members of the J.League since the league's inaugural season in 1993, and have competed for the title countless times, especially since the 2000s. While there is no geographical relationship between the two teams, and it's not a typical derby match, it goes without saying that their rivalry is comparable to, or even greater than, that of a derby.
In recent years, the two teams have alternated wins and losses over the two years since 2020, and from 2022 until the first half of last season, they have always fought a close battle, drawing seven consecutive Trial against the same team, the longest record in the J1 League, proving the extent of their rivalry.
Urawa will continue with their manager Maciej Skorza and Kashima with manager Tatsuya Oniki, and the lineup will remain largely unchanged from last season, but the man who will be most dangerous for Urawa will be Yuma Suzuki. A versatile forward who can both create chances and score them, and who is not afraid to put in the effort defensively, Suzuki scored a goal in last year's Trial at Saitama Stadium, breaking the three-and-a-half-year deadlock between the Reds and Kashima, and he is the player the Reds must not let do his job.
The focus of attention for Urawa Reds is Ryoma Watanabe, who was appointed captain this season. Not only does he sweat more than anyone, as can be seen from his longest running distance, but he also leads the team in both name and reality, both in terms of his decisiveness and his vocal ability. He is sure to be the man to decide the outcome of this important Trial.
This will be the first match at Saitama Stadium in a special league before the start of the season, with the right to participate in the ACL Elite at stake. With the players and fans of both teams creating a frenzy, it is sure to be Trial that will make you think, "This is football!"
